The drone was headed toward a U.S. warship.
The Pentagon announced Wednesday that sailors aboard the USS Thomas Hunter engaged a drone that originated from Yemen and was approaching the ship.
“The drone was destroyed and there were no U.S. casualties,” the Defense Department reported. Additional details were not provided.
Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said the U.S. did not launch a recovery effort for the $30 million drone, although the Houthis made an effort to salvage it. She said it was unlikely they could “recover anything of significance.”
It is the second time the American military has destroyed a projectile or drone coming from Yemen. Last month, the U.S. military destroyed a missile fired by Iranian-backed Houthis as it headed north, potentially targeting Israel.
Earlier this week the Pentagon said, “We always reserve the right to respond at a time and place of our choosing.”
